We assembled in Jones Beach Field 5 parking area with Maureen, our trip leader/docent. She had agreed to lead us and provide comentary from her background in oceanography. We proceeded along the beach while she provided interesting perspective on the mineralogy of Long Island beach sand then took the stairs and boardwalk up to the lighthouse. |

The view from the top of the Light house is incredible. Here, looking east we can see the lighthouse grounds with kismet in the foreground and beyond, the town of Saltaire in the distance. |

Looking west we can see Robert Moses State Park with the water tower at the end of Robert Moses Causeway in the distance. In the base of the light is a museum with intersting exhibits on the lore of baymen and life saving stations along Fire Island. Climbing the many steps we can explore the tower. Here some of the hardy soles that braved the many steps look out at the views. Bottom left: Lesley and Maureen look out over the Great South Bay. Bottom Right: Tom surveys the Atlantic seashore. |
